5 Symptoms of an ugly room and how to fix them

Don’t we all have days when our skin doesn’t look right or when our hair is frizzy as hell?
When it comes to our personal appearances, we all know when we don’t look fine or when things are not exactly how we want them to be. An unruly hair day calls for a visit to the nearest salon. Acne calls for a visit to a skin doctor and a chipped polish means that it’s time to freshen up your manicure. Over time, we’ve mastered the art of fixing it. But what happens when it comes to our rooms? We all have a friend whose room is forever unkempt. What makes it so ugly? A room should reflect one’s interests, preferences, and choices. How do you do it? There are some fixable changes that can help turn a room from frumpy to fabulous. Let’s identify the symptoms of an ugly room and fix it together. Yeah?

1. Wrong wall colour
Wall colour can make a huge difference to the look and feel of the space. Dingy wall colour can make a room look ugly, whereas the right colour can make the room look pretty! The wrong colour can make the room look lustreless and petty. It makes the room look ‘blah’!Over a period of time, your wall may develop cracks or may have brown spots due to mishandling. This makes your room look petty or off-putting. Thus, it becomes very important to select the right wall colour for your room. Consult an interior designer to help you select the right colour for your room which goes with the theme of your room and space. Treat the cracks and get the wall painted. It is easy to get your wall fixed and it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg to do that.

2. Messy room
An unkempt room is a big turn-off and it’s one of the signs of an ugly room! Clutter sucks and you should get rid of it. Your jacket, clothes, bedsheet, blankets, shoes, letters, keys and toiletries shouldn’t be on display for everyone else to see. Make sure there’s enough storage for all these things in your room and bathroom. Nobody wants to see what you wore last night, so buy a fancy laundry bag which you can use to do away it the clothes. Use wicker baskets to store toiletries in your bathroom. You can use a bed frame with drawers to store your blankets and bedsheets. You can hang a cork wall for your precious jewellery so that you can find it the next time you want it. Have a shelving space for your room so that you can neatly stack your books. A tidy room is pleasing to the eye and makes one feel positive.

3. Bad odour
Scientists have found that smell is the sense that’s most tied into memory. So, how a place smells makes a lasting impression on others. It’s funny that when you try to bake or roast something, it smells wonderful but when you fry something, it smells terrible. Sometimes, the smell could come from your sink. This smell then makes its way to the furniture and you don’t realize it because you have stayed with it long enough to have been immune to it. Ask your neighbour for an honest opinion and they’d tell you how your place smells. Tada! It’s time to get to work and fix it. How to do it? How about leaving the windows open after cooking?Mix vinegar, lemon juice and baking powder to clean the sink. It’s easy to get rid of the smell. Hosting a party tonight? Well, buy a home fragrance solution, there are plenty of flavours available in the market and it doesn’t cost much.

4. Poor lighting
Imagine spending your entire day in a poorly lit room. Don’t get a very positive vibe, right? Poor lighting can make a room look gloomy and unwelcoming. You need to assess whether you have enough sources of light. Lights and light colours impact the mood of the individual occupying the room and set a theme. For example, you may have noticed that when you go to an exotic resort to stay, the room is lit with yellow lights. It gives a luxurious feel to space. A well-lit room looks pretty and beautiful. Multiple light sources are needed in a single room. It could be in the form of overhead lights, scones, dimmers or lamps. The room should have the right combination of general, task and accent lighting to change the room from grungy to glam. Adding a mirror can instantly make a room look brighter as it reflects light and can instantly accessorize a room. Easy fix, isn’t it?

5. Improper colours and textures. Have you seen a room that looks like a fashion show gone wrong? Yeah, that pretty much makes the room look ugly. Your room probably looks too jazzy or too confusing and overbearing to the senses. What makes it so? The improper usage of colours may have caused this. A room must have a theme and all the décor should complement the theme. Too many colours used in the same room will make room bad. You cannot team a printed cushion with a printed bedsheet in two different colours that just do not go together. Keep the room fresh, relevant and modern by going minimalistic. A minimal look is far better than a jazzy one. Keep it fancy but neat and pretty. Decide on a colour scheme that sets the theme if your room and adds décor that enhances the room. Consult an interior designer who understands your objective and designs your personal haven the way you like it.
